NCNCA Upgrade Requirements

HOW TO APPLY:
An upgrade application consists of 2 things:
  • A letter requesting an upgrade which includes a resume of your racing experience and a record of the previous twelve month's placings (please list races chronologically, with dates and accurate race names).
  • A Stamped, self-addressed envelope.
  • Mail upgrade applications to the NCNCA at the address at the end of this page. Casey Kerrigan and Barry Orlando will be doing upgrades at races, particularly 5-4 and 4-3.
    Casey will process emailed upgrade requests as well at casey@caseykerrigan.com Upgrade requests sent in via E-mail should include your license number, your mailing address along with your race resume. Please do not include attached files and send messages only in plain text.


    TRACK UPGRADES:
    Send upgrade request as described in 1) above to John Simmons/Track Upgrade Committee, c/o NCVA, 985 Hellyer Ave., San Jose, CA 95111, or submit a complete request to one of the committee members at the track. Please consult the track committee for upgrade requirements.

    QUALIFYING RACES:
    For road upgrades, qualifying races are road races, criteriums, and circuit races.

    QUALIFYING TIME PERIOD:
    The twelve month period preceding your application.

    REQUIREMENTS and NOTES BY CATEGORY

    Category 5 to 4:
    Experience in 10 qualifying races OR 5 races plus a skills clinic OR(for track) 5 races and 3 approved track sessions.

    Category 4 to 3:
    Experience in 15 qualifying races and 5 top ten placings in races with a field size of at least 20.
    Masters, women and juniors: no field size minimum.

    Category 3 to 2 Seniors: - (Check this in the following months for changes)
    MINIMUM FIELD SIZE OF 20 for seniors.
    Women, Masters, and Juniors field sizes - see below
    Required: 20 points.
    • 1st place receives 1 point for winning.
    • 1st place receives 1 point for every 10 riders in the field.
    • 2nd place gets 2 fewer points than 1st.
    • 3rd place gets 3 fewer points than 1st. etc., etc. etc.
    Examples: In a field of 30, 1st gets 4 points, 2nd gets 2, 3rd gets 1. In a field of 100 riders, 1st gets 11 points, 2nd gets 9, 3rd gets 8, 4th gets 7, etc. For every 10 riders there is 1 place. No automatic rounding up. 45 does not get rounded up to 50! Required total to upgrade: 20 points.

    Juniors, Category 3 to 2:
    Only placings in senior 3 races qualify for points. See above.

    Masters 35+, Category 3 to 2:
    1 placing for every 7 riders, Category 1/2/3 races or better. 20 points required.

    Women, Category 3 to 2:
    1 placing for every 5 riders, Category 1/2/3 races or better. 20 points required.


    Category 2 to 1, ALL RIDERS :
    30 points required. Note: Pros are eliminated from placings. (Check this in the following months for changes)
    Qualifying races: Men - Senior 2 or 1/2 races only, field - 40, Women-Senior Women 1/2/3 or better - field 20. Also requirement one placing in top 25% of national level event.

    Points system for category 2 to 1 are as follows:
    Criterium: 1st - 6th: 7,5,4,3,2,1
    Road Race: 1st - 6th: 10,7,5,3,2,1
    Stage Race RR (see requirements below): 1st - 8th: 10,8,6,5,4,3,2,1
    Stage Race Final GC (see requirements below): 1st - 15th: 20,17,15,13,11,10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1

    Stage Race Requirements:
    Stage races must be timed, at least two days, meet field size and distance req., 2-4 day races only 1 criterium; 4-10 day races only 2 criteriums Omniums do not count. Stage races on points do not count.
