A message from Garry Birch regarding the cancellation of the NCNCA Championship TTT:

It is with regret that Team Fremont / FFBC pb Chipotle are canceling the Championship TTT schedule for this Saturday August 14th.

As mentioned in a previous email to the NCNCA, we had a minimum number of entrants we needed to receive to run this event, and as of this evening we are 51% down on registrations.

We would like to thank those people who did enter, or who contacted us with inquiries and comments about the event. It is our intention to survey the district to find out why this event received so little attention, so when you see that survey, please take the time to respond.

Once again, our sincere apologies. We hope to see you all soon, and happy riding.

This year's Minden Park Criterium (slated for Sunday, July 25th) has been cancelled.

This cancellation has no effect on the Carson Diamond Valley Road Race – that race will still be held as planned this Saturday, July 24th.

There have been some changes to the categories in the Minden Park Criterium on July 25th. The correct version of the flyer [7] is up on the Road Calendar page next to the listing for that race. If you are racing in or planning on racing in the Minden Park Crit, we recommend that you check out the categories as they stand now.

The Oakland Grand Prix (7/5) has been replaced with the Big Creek Lumber Criterium (7/5) at the former Castle Air Force Base in Atwater (near Merced and Snelling). Everyone entered in the Oakland Grand Prix is now entered in the Big Creek Lumber Criterium. If you desire to drop out and get a credit for a future VP race, send an e-mail to velopromo@sportsbaseonline.com [8] by Wednesday at 5pm to get the credit (and send to the same email address to use the credit in the future).

The schedule for Big Creek Lumber is going up on velopromo.com [9], and is the same as for the Oakland Grand Prix – with a smaller prize list and entry fee for the 1/2/Pro and Women 1/2 races. The course is flat, shady, and has two 90 degree right turns and one long 180 curve.

Not only will Pleasanton be the site of some stellar racing this Sunday, but the NCNCA will be rolling out some high-tech timing equipment for the Masters' District Crit Champs to give riders (and spectators) a sense of what the future might hold for bike racing in the district.

Thanks to technology from IBM, One2Go Events (FinishLynx) and Times 7 Timing, you'll get to see an excellent finish line (chip) timing demonstration, including digital projection (for easy viewing) with lap times posted post-race.

As you may have heard from the newspaper reports, tragedy hit our community on Sunday at the Warnerville Road Race near Oakdale. Unexpectedly, it involved not a racer but three of the many dedicated people who help make our races possible. Jeremy Regalado and two other individuals were electrocuted while setting up a communications antenna before the race. For Jeremy, the injuries were fatal.

We wish to send our condolences to Jeremy's family and many friends -- he was well-liked and a friendly face on race mornings. NCNCA has set up a matching fund for donations. Individuals and clubs providing donations will be matched dollar for dollar of their giving up to the first $5,000 given. This May, there will be a two-day women's track clinic at Hellyer Velodrome (in San Jose), taught by Masters Track National Champion Annabell Holland. If you're interested in track racing but haven't completed your three Saturdays to be eligible, this clinic is for you! It satisfies the "Three Saturday Beginner Class" requirement.

After the weekend, you'll be prepared and certified to race the track, plus you'll be eligible to race in the "Get-Ready-for-Summer" race on Saturday, May 29th – with separate Cat 3 and Cat 4 women's track races. It's part of the Bay Area Women's Cycling (BAWC) series.

There's been a lot of talk on the NCNCA Forum [21] about bike crashes while racing, how to best avoid them, and the general dangers of sudden maneuvers in a pack. When the time comes to move up a category, most riders have questions. If it's your first time upgrading, you probably have a few. Luckily, we have an Upgrade FAQ [26] right here on the NCNCA.org website. It's chock full of the info you need, including details on how to properly format a résumé for an upgrade request, which is pretty important.

A Quick Overview of the Registration and Wait List Procedures and Category Changes

After you have completed your registration you will receive a confirmation email and your name will immediately appear on the Registered Athletes page.

If a category is full and wait lists are added, you will be added to the Registered Athletes page with a (W) next to your name: however, your credit card will not be billed.

If a spot becomes available, you will be removed from the wait list and added to the category and your credit card will be billed to correct amount. You will receive an email confirmation and your name will appear on the Registered Athletes page.

If you are on a wait list and no longer wish to be you can remove yourself by following these steps:

• Go to www.sportsbaseonline.com [31]
• In the upper right hand corner select Profile
• Enter your Username and Password and click "+Login"
• On the left hand side of the screen is an option to View Your Events
• Any Joined Wait Lists will be listed with a button to Remove From List to the right
• Click on Remove From List
• Confirm that you are removing yourself from the correct wait list and click "+Confirm"

If you request a category change your credit card will reflect a credit for the current category and a new charge for the new category. This allows for categories with different pricing to be billed correctly.

For Velo Promo Events Only:

If you can no longer compete in a Velo Promo event, you can request a credit by sending an email with your name, the event you are not competing in, and your category to Velopromo@sportsbaseonline.com [32]. You will be sent confirmation that you have been removed from the event and a credit issued. There will also be instructions on how to redeem your credit.

Requests are processed immediately upon being received so please be sure before you send the email.

In response to a request from the UCI that radios be banned in all national calendar races, the USCF Board of Trustees met and amended the rule regarding the use of race radios in all USA Cycling sanctioned road and track races. Radios will now be banned in all USA Cycling road and track races.

In 2010, race radios will only be allowed for use by teams and riders in UCI Category HC or Category 1 races in the U.S. per UCI regulations.

If you're wondering if a race on the Road calendar is part of a series, there are icons to the far right of the race listing, and you can click through to the series calendars with the link at the top of the Road page.

If you're registered for, or planning on racing in, the Early Bird RR in Patterson tomorrow morning, the race is planned to go off on time. The roads are open (as of 9pm), a County crew will clear any rock from the road at 3am, and Velo Promo will have a crew in front of the first riders in the event. As the Velo Promo site says, "A slide in the morning could still close things, but we'll be there ready to start. Weather itself looks good."

We just got word that, due to permitting issues, the Apple Pie Crit won't be held on February 6th as planned. It's listed as "postponed" on the Road race calendar because the promoter is attempting to have the event later in the year (possibly April). The word from Rene Goncalves:

"The Colavita Baci NorCal team will either give you a Credit for a future event, or a refund. You can ask via BikeReg for a refund, or email me [52], and I will forward to the team for a refund. If you want a credit for a future event, please let me know, so I can make a note of it... I am working with the city of Petaluma for a new venue... Please accept my and the Colavita Team's apology and we hope to see you at our other events."

Clubs & teams – plan to join us at the Early Bird Criterium Training Series on Sunday, January 24th for Meet the Teams Day. Bring a tent and spend the day. This is a great way to showcase your club, socialize with other racers, and meet potential recruits! With the record number of EB participants this week, there are lots of men, women, and juniors who will be interested in knowing who YOU are and why your club is unique.

Happy New Year - the start of the 2010 racing season is almost here. The Early Bird Criterium 5-week training series starts on Sunday, January 3rd (for more info on the series, click here [58]).

To ensure that all of our mentors are on the same page we are holding the Early Bird Mentor Training event on Saturday for Category 1/2/3/4 and pro riders. Please note that a Category 4 mentor must attend this session to mentor during this series.

What: Early Bird Mentor Training
Why: To train mentors to give the new racer an excellent "first impression"
When: Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010 from 3 to 5pm. A two hour session for mentors to share their skill strengths and question/answer period in hopes to improve our program.
Where: Corner 1 of the Early Bird course (Campus and Dumbarton Circle in Fremont, just off Hwy 84, east of the Dumbarton bridge) park up at the end of the cul de sac on Campus Ct.
How: On your bike, with warm clothes, ideas and questions.

Two concentrated areas, and one outcome goal for the day:
 
Concentrated Areas:
1) sticking to the curriculum and not letting new rider questions take you away from the core of the learning
2) effectively demonstrating the skills that the new riders are about to learn

Outcome Goal:
Volunteers on January 2nd will be "classified" and/ or self-selected into one of three groups:
1) Guest Speakers
2) Leaders
3) Mentors

The 2010 NCNCA Race Scheduling Meeting will be on Monday, November 2nd. The location for the meeting is:

The meeting will start at 7pm. For those of you who don't want to battle traffic to get to the meeting, the location is very near the Orinda BART station. In addition to the race scheduling, it will be the last chance for clubs to cast their vote in the 2010 NCNCA officer election. Clubs that haven't voted online and who have their NCNCA delegate at the meeting can cast their vote at the meeting. Note that only a club's official delegate can cast the vote. When clubs join NCNCA they are asked to list a NCNCA delegate and an alternate delegate. A club can change their delegate if they submit notice in writing to the NCNCA secretary (Robert Leibold) before the start of the meeting.

Casey plans to broadcast the audio from the race scheduling meeting at http://www.stickam.com/ncnca_kc [64], but be aware that the broadcast might not happen for various reasons (such as: Stickam servers not working, Casey's computer dies, the wireless broadband card dies, etc.). Casey will also try to relay comments people in the chat room make to the live meeting, but priority will be given to the happenings at the live meeting.

It's important that we have an email address for a representative for each race so we can send this representative updated Info during the scheduling process.

The road series calendar [74] has been updated and series logos have been added next to races on the road calendar – this includes dates for the 'Ville and Cal Cup Series. The mountain bike calendar [75] recently underwent a massive overhaul and now includes MTB races through December. For easier navigation 'jump to' links have been added to the road calendar, so you can jump right to the month you're interested in without having to scroll.

Every club should have at least two officials; here's your chance to become one! On April 26th, Sunday, in Soulsbyville, Robert Leibold will conduct a New Official's Seminar and Test.

There'll be a seminar on Sunday from 8:30am-5pm, covering road, track, cyclocross and mountain bike racing (location: Velo Promo, 19780 Soulsbyville Road, Soulsbyville, CA 95372 – 1.3 miles off Hwy 108 & 6 miles above Sonora). This will be followed by the open-book new officials test.

The USAC rulebooks and official's manual Pt I are available online at https://www.usacycling.org/news/user/story.php?id=369 [76]. For the test it is encouraged that people put the online rulebooks on their laptops and then use a laptop during the test. It's much easier to search for certain keywords using the search function than to scroll through page after page. If a 2009 or 2008 USAC rulebook is available, that should also be brought to the seminar and test.

Davis will be the new home of the US Bicycling Hall of Fame, which is relocating from Somerville, NJ.

"We're very excited that the Bicycling Hall of Fame will move to Davis, which hosted the first Amgen Tour of California stage earlier this year" said Caroline Beteta, president & CEO of the California Travel & Tourism Commission and the U.S. Travel Association.

In a brief statement by President Dan Kehew, the California Bicycle Museum Board of Directors thanked the Davis community, the City of Davis, and the University of California, Davis for supporting the relocation proposal, which will involve integration with the California Bicycle Museum and thus a relocation to a larger facility in Davis. City of Davis officials are still in negotiations with several local facilities and will announce the new location for the museums within the next several weeks.

Dawn Wylong, president of the Hall of Fame, said that overwhelming Davis support for cycling tipped the scales. "The Davis community is passionate about bicycles, at every level, in every aspect of cycling," Wylong said. "In Davis, the Hall of Fame will be celebrated and appreciated for what it represents."

The 2009 BAWC Series [79] begins Sunday with the Menlo Park Grand Prix!

The first of 9 Series races, the Tri-Flow Menlo Park Grand Prix p/b Hawk Relay [80] is the place to be next Sunday! In addition to the Category 4 and Category 3 Series races, the MPGP will also offer a Women's 1/2/3 race this year. This is a rare opportunity for category 3 women to race twice in one day, and a great chance for women's teams to all race and support their teammates in all categories!

For the Category 4 and Category 3 Series races, BAWC will add to the already great prize lists:

The 2009 Women's Racing Series, run by Bay Area Women's Cycling [85] and sponsored by NCNCA [86], is a points series with individual and team competitions. Points are automatically awarded to women who enter the category 3 and 4 Series races. Team points are awarded when two or more women from the same team compete in the same Series race. Snelling road race will have chip timing/results this year.

This means there will be two steps to registration. (1) You will need to get in line for registration as usual (show license, sign/turn in form, pick up numbers), and then (2) go to the chip desk, to pick up your timing chip. There will be people there to help put them on your bike, so bring your bike to that line. Immediately following finishing (or dropping out), go to the station just off the loop before returning to Snelling town to have your chip removed. Do not cross the finish line backwards after finishing; it will give you a later finish.

We are pleased to announce that the Butterfly Criterium currently scheduled for Sunday, May 31, 2009, is now on the Pacific Grove City Council agenda for Wednesday, February 18, 2009. We already have the support of all downtown PG organizations and this is the last step in the approval process to bring back this storied race to our community. The meeting starts at 6:00 pm and we are currently projecting to have our issue discussed and hopefully approved under "new items" around 7:30 pm. The agenda will be posted on the city's website by 5:00 pm this Friday where we may have an updated time for our agenda item.

It is extremely important that we have a large showing of local support for this event. The Pacific Grove Chamber of Commerce and the Ghost Tree Racing Team is requesting all area cyclists and their families/children show up to show their support by attending this meeting. Cyclists are requested to wear appropriate team cycling shirts, vests or jackets. Please also distribute this email to all interested parties across the cycling community.
