One of the highlights at this year's Carrera de San Rafael is the Kid's Ride and together with "Safe Routes to Schools", the National program started here in Marin County and a beneficiary of this year's race, the Carrera has now massaged their schedule to add an end-of-season Junior category race to the event schedule. Shoehorned into the Kid's Ride space, 15/16 and 17/18 year old Juniors will compete on the downtown circuit just before the heavyweight event of the day - the 90 minute Pro Men's race.
The "Safe Routes to Schools program" promotes walking and biking to school through education and incentives that show how much fun it can be. And by adding a race for Juniors to the day the Carrera steering committee hopes to create a natural cycling evolution for youngsters at the Carrera de San Rafael. Start out in the Kid's Ride, when you're old enough take out a license and race in the Junior category event and eventually line up with the Pro's in the main event.
Greg LeMond got his start watching the 1974 State Road Championships pass by his house outside Carson City - what future Levi Leipheimer or Freddie Rodriguez or Christine Thorburn is going to get their start in our sport by the Carrera de San Rafael's Kid's Ride and Junior race?
