I would like to introduce the members of the 2010 NCNCA “Winner Within†female, Mentor Program. We will mentor all women cat 4 races (no combinations) this season. This dedicated, qualified and friendly, group of female mentors are eager to assist, inspire and inform new cat 4 women with questions concerning the sport we love; bicycle racing. Please share this information with your team, thank you.
Elis was a self-proclaimed bookworm and couch potato until her husband introduced her to cycling in 2002. She completed her first bicycle races in 2004 with the UC Berkeley Cal Cycling team. After graduation she continued racing in Northern California, and joined the Winner Within mentoring program in 2007. She prefers fast, technical criteriums, but finds it hard to resist a good hard climb.
Laura's racing results include multiple stage wins at the women's Tour de France, a medal at the World Road Racing Championships, a spot on the Olympic Team, and two Criterium National Criterium titles. With the number of Laura's career cycling victories are well over 250. Laura's current career foci are athletic program development, coaching and directing both junior and women cyclists, leading clinics for beginning cyclists and in 2009 was the Race Director for the inaugural Women’s Tour of California Criterium. After retiring from professional athletics her passion has shifted her own athletic performance to helping others learn the joys of cycling at every level of the sport. Laura is currently the executive director of Team Swift which is a nonprofit organization based in Sonoma County , California . Team Swift brings resources and guidance to 10-18 year old cyclists, starting with their first cycling experiences and continuing through the USA National Team level. She was also the director of the Amgen Women's Tour of California in 2007 & 2008.. Laura's greatest satisfaction comes from helping athletes achieve personally defining breakthrough experiences in athletics.
This is Laurie’s third year as coordinator of the “Winner Within†women mentors. She is honored to work with dedicated mentors who are experienced racers and who value the integrity of safe and skilled behavior in the field. Being mentored herself for two years through the Early Birds, she recognized then, the essential aspects of the basic race fundamentals and the genuine, qualified, guidance from the mentors whom she learned . Laurie is one of four leaders who organizes the Early Bird mentoring series (2009/2010). Laurie is a local cat 2 racer.
2010 is Laurel's 17th year of bike racing. Her racing experience is with Criteriums, Stage Races, and Time Trials in the United States. She specializes in teaching bike handling, and safe racing skills. Since she loves to coach, she works for Wenzel Coaching, a reputable coaching company based in Walnut Creek, CA. She is currently a Level 2 Cycling Coach for USA Cycling. During the school year she teaches Physical Education to 4th and 5th graders in Windsor, CA. Feel free to contact her with questions you might have about your own potential as a bike racer. 707-829-2619
Meredith has always loved competing in sports, but didn't start racing bicycles until she was 43. After racing on a co-ed club team for several years, she and a teammate decided to start a women-only team to support the newly opened Left Coast Cyclery in Berkeley. With lots of hard work and commitment, the team was the 2004 Master Women Best All-around Team in the NCNCA. Now retired from racing, Meredith is Vice President of the Berkeley Bike Club and has promoted many of the clubs races over the last 10 years. 'Continued involvement in the cycling community, whether it is helping put on races or mentoring first-time racers, is my way of giving back to a sport that has taught me so much.
Holly has been racing for 7 years. She races on the road as a Category 2, a Category 4 on the track (hopefully that will be a Cat 3 this year!) and a Beginner on the MTB. Proudest moment so far: a podium (3rd place) at Sea Otter in the XC MTB race in 2008, after falling "a zillion times". (2nd proudest moment: Not falling when demo'ing wheel touching at the Early Birds in 2008.) Fortunately, she keeps upright on the road as much as possible and has been mentoring at the Early Bird series for the past four years. "I found the mentoring at the Early Birds so helpful my first year, that I wanted to continue to give back."
Vanderkitten's new rider for 2010 Starla Teddergreen has made quite an impact on the NorCal racing scene over the last 3 years. With her punchy, attacking style of racing she is continuing to set her sights on bigger goals. Her past year in racing took her to Belgium to compete on a new level as well as gain valuable racing experience. She traveled through out the US to compete in NRC and Stage races and this helped her strength continue to develop in Crits, and Road Races. Through her experience racing her desire to help others realize their potential has become an exciting new prospect, and she has found a new satisfaction in mentoring and sharing her love for the sport with others.
