Weeknight Races
Mon, 03/02/2009 - 10:13am
I'd like to take a poll of how many racers think they would attend regularly scheduled weeknight races. The Oregon Bicycle Racing Association has weeknight races every evening during the season in addition to their excellent weekend and stage race schedule, and the turnout for these is great. I don't see why this wouldn't work here as well, as we're one of the strongest districts in the country.

Twilights in Santa Rosa at least for may

It's great to see some weeknight racing opportunities opening up with the Track Fights Race Series sponsored by Sexual Camel in the Bay Area, and now I've learned of the upcoming Davis Twilight Crit Series. The Davis Crits will be every other Monday from 7:00-10:00 starting May 4th, and will feature Cat4/5, Cruiser, Women's, Fixie, and Cat1/2/3 races as well as music, food and fun. Davis businesses Bistro33 and Davis Wheelworks deserve kudos for helping bring this opportunity to us (contact twilight.crit@daviswheelworks.com). Chico has been enjoying weeknight racing sponsored by Chico Cyclist (chicocyclist.blogspot.com) with Tuesday night crits as well as weeknight road races and TT's. Any other opportunities out there I haven't mentioned?
Last year John Trefethen tried to get a twilight going in Livermore.
It should have been doable, lots of cyclists local, and other commuting through on 580.
It was poorly attended.
I do miss the Fremont twilights, those were the bomb back in the day.
Ron
the Sexual Camel club hosted a series called track fights last fall utilizing the Brisbane crit course in a reverse direction and without the 180.
It was a fun 6 week tuesday night series, and I hear they plan to run it again starting soon.
And....it is POINTS racing!!!!!!!
I don't have any specific ideas for evening race venues, although the Infineon Series is the model. Racers need to look at what their area has to offer re: park loops, isolated country road loops, raceways, business parks, undeveloped housing tracts, etc. and come up with suggestions. Formalizing the races under NCNCA the way OBRA does would make sense to make it easier for local clubs to organize these, assure safe racing conditions and obtain USCF insurance. Issuing season passes would expedite registration.
Up here in the Sacramento Valley, we used to have weeknight races at Land Park. Race rides like the Sacramento River Ride, Davis Bike Club Race Ride, or Chico Fast Fifty provide good race training, but there are a number of safety issues these contend with. With turnouts for these often approaching 100 racers or more, there surely is enough interest to support formal races.
We always appreciate the roadies coming to the velodrome and making it tough for the sprinters.
There's always the Tuesday night port rides in Oakland. Although unofficial, the event is self policed and the "naughties" are given a talkin' too. If you are feeling like a stronman you can always pull the headwind where many just look for shelter.
Should be in fullswing as the season gets going.
It’s really going to depend on where it is – I would love to race on weeknights and I like the idea but won’t be able to swing it if the drive from work/home is too far.
You really need to pin down some prospective locations to get an accurate response.
I second Chris' thoughts on Infineon. Unfortunately, Infineon either just went bankrupt or will shortly. Perhaps the track won't be manned and we can do some guerilla racing.
Santa Rosa also used to have some really cool twilight crits, but there were issues with the businesses at the park. I'd prefer to race over lonely intervals any day of the week.
I for one appreciate any additional racing opportunity and would enjoy going to weeknight events (provided the drive/ride was not too long).
I really miss the Infineon weeknight races that were going on a couple years ago since that road course is so much fun to ride.
Did you have a location in mind?
