The USAC rules say "Experience in 10 mass start races". Does that mean 10 races that you *completed*, or just 10 races that you *started*?

Patrick - the rule is that

Patrick - the rule is that you have to start 10 mass-start races as a Cat 5 (i.e. Crits, Circuit Races and Road Races, not Time Trials). But Sub's suggestion is valid that the point is that you learn to stay with the race, learn how to work within the pack and other bike handling skills, etc. Use each race to learn, to see how races unfold, where attacks happen and so forth. If you find yourself off the back, work to get back on before you've blown all your matches. If you get pulled, work on your conditioning and try to avoid being in a situation where you're getting dropped, etc.

I've already raced an entire

I've already raced an entire season and there were a couple early on that I didn't finish but I've also got some top-ten finishes so I'm really not too worried about not being "ready".

One more question: If I'm already signed up for a race as Cat 5 and the upgrade came between now and race day, would I be allowed to race or would I be out of luck? Similarly if I changed categories and the upgrade didn't come in time I'm sure I'd be completely out of luck, yes?

USAC must update your new category

Until USAC says your upgrade has been processed, you race in your current category. Check your page at usacycling to see the status of your upgrade request. You can print out the new category the moment it takes effect and then race in that category.

You may only race your current Category

GFM is correct - you race in your current Category. Just be aware that once your upgrade comes through, you may no longer start in the previous category races. Since you're a 5 and are upgrading to a 4, if you've registered for a 4/5 race, no worries. If not, contact the promoter as soon as you can (or arrive at Registration EXTRA EARLY) to see if there's a slot available to you.

Please also make sure you get the right race number series for the race you're going to start with. And of course, this season going from 5 to 4 means that you'll now need a timing chip - so allow even more time to get that accomplished.

I believe you just have to

I believe you just have to start them, but if your not finishing a cat 5 race for any reason other than a mechanical/crash I wouldn't recommend moving up anyways.
