Stanford Cycling Campus Criterium, Sunday April 19

Hello NCNCA.

The Stanford University Cycling Team is pleased to announce the return of bicycle racing to the Stanford campus with the 2009 John C. Schlesinger Memorial Criterium. Come out to the races and cheer on your alma mater!

Collegiate cycling is a California tradition, with many notable racers such as Ben and Andy Jacques-Maynes, Amber Rais, Brooke Miller, and neo-pro Paul Mach first cutting their teeth on the collegiate circuit.

On Sunday, April 19th, the top cyclists from the West Coast Cycling Conference will descend upon the palm-treed roads of Stanford University for a day of fast racing. Racing begins at 7:30 a.m. and will run until just before noon, with the highlights of the day – the women’s and men’s A races – starting at 9:45 a.m. and 10:35 a.m., respectively.

The course sends racers counterclockwise around Galvez, Arboretum, and Lasuen, with the finishing stretch on Campus Drive. The pan-flat, four-corner course is 0.92 miles long, and much of race will be visible through the elm trees.

Event Schedule:
7:30 a.m.: Men’s D (20 min)
7:55 a.m.: Men’s C (30 min)
8:30 a.m.: Women’s B/C (20 min)
8:55 a.m.: Men’s B (45 min)
9:45 a.m.: Women’s A (45 min)
10:35 a.m.: Men’s A (60 min)

Unfortunately, because of timing constraints, we are unable to offer non-collegiate categories this year. If there is interest in non-collegiate categories for a Stanford campus race, I would appreciate feedback.

Also, if there is general interest in a crit the same weekend as Sea Otter, the Stanford team is in a good position to host such a race. While a full-day of on-campus racing would be great, hosting a full day of racing on the University campus would be a challenge. We have used area office parks in the past, and would probably have to do that instead. Usually, promoters steer clear of Sea Otter weekend, so I would appreciate feedback on that question as well.

Evan Pickett
