Sonoma Mt Crits Cancelled
Wed, 05/23/2007 - 11:07am
Have received word that the Sonoma Mt Crit on June 3rd and the Sonoma Mt. Crit reverse on June 10th have been cancelled due to low pre-entries. Also the remaining Santa Rosa Twilights have been cancelled due to complaints from the property owners and difficulties in renewing the event permit from the city due to the complaints.

Lars,
If you need some bodies for marshalling, whatever, Team CS will help out! Contact me: 415-328-1373.

There might be some hope for the Santa Rosa Twilights still. Lars Norlund thinks he will be able to jump through all the hoops that the city and business park owner wants to throw up and so the series may continue. Lars is currently in the process of trying to renewing the permit from the city and applying for a new USAC permit. It sounds like he will need a lot more volunteers each night to meet the requirements of the city so people interested in keeping the series going might start twisting arms of anyone you know to come out and help keep the series alive.
Total bummer. Rene has done such a fine job since she took it over, and done everything in her power to lesser our impact on the business park occupants. I've been doing this race for something like 15 yrs, ever since Dave ran it... and I can say that its helped develop several talented local riders through the years. Lets hope Rene doesn't get too discouraged, stays involved in cycling.
its mighty frighting! one more race gone, but a promoter as well. typical american attitude work to survive, not like the euros work to have fun. these people get so caught up with the monies & bills that they forget to have fun and when they see others enjoying themselves they have to try and stomp on the fun
That is really too bad. Rene always put on great events (and always included juniors races--with substantial prizes), but I know the hassles and restrictions on the Tuesday Night crits were getting ridiculous and almost impossible to enforce--no riding the course (which consists of public streets after all) before 5:15, no standing on some minor strip of grass, etc. The Tuesday nighters were pretty much Team Swift training races/group rides, and were a great way for a geographically spread-out juniors team to get together once a week. Swifties will miss them for sure.
and so it goes ...
From the tone of the message to me it sounded like the promoter might be getting out of the race promoting business for good. she was talking about selling all the equipment she had bought to put on the twilights/corporate Crits.
This is too bad. That course has been used for twenty years for twilights and several times a year for regularly scheduled races. It was the crit course for the Masters Nats in '96. Another case, I'm afraid, of growth and development having an effect on the availability of viable race courses. Does anyone know if this also impacts the remaining scheduled Corparate Crits?

Do we have any details on the complaints from the neighbors? Is it general annoyance with the race taking place or specific issues with participant behavior?

I think general annoyance was the major problem. The people/businesses at the business park haven't been happy with the races for a while now. They kept getting more nit picky about issues. for example if riders or spectators were standing on the sidewalk or the grass between the road and the sidewalk they were OK. If the riders or spectators were standing on the grass between the sidewalk and the business parking lot then they were trespassing and the promoter was going to be held liable for the trespassing. Things were escalating to the point of the business park management was treating a lawsuit because one of the business owners wouldn't use the coned off lane put in especially so they could have free access to their business. Instead this person insisted on moving the barricades that kept traffic off the course so they could drive down the road to get to their business.
Bummer. Rene was not happy last night at the races. She's done a great job with them this year - and so has every one else that has helped. They are always well run.
Thank you Rene for putting these on as long as you did.
