Registration for the 2007 Sacramento Golden Wheelmen spring races is finally open.

At the Bariani Road Race, we've listened to the Women Elite 4 racers' requests and added a separate Women's 4 field.

The Land Park Criterium is running on the revised Land Park course for the 3rd year. Its much safer (albeit harder) than the traditional course.

Pre-registration is online at: https://www.sportsbaseonline.com/Item.aspx?item_id=1550 for Land Park

and at https://www.sportsbaseonline.com/Item.aspx?item_id=1551 for the Barian Road Race.

More info at : SACGW.com

Dunno if it's feasible but years ago when I was in SGW and helped promote Camellia Fest I paid all the helpers. It was fair to compensate the club members who helped out, and the ones who didn't got a bit less race profit to share in. That was also the first year of cash prizes.

I like the most recent version of the course. The slight change to the first turn at the far end was better because the acceleration back to speed was more gradual (because there was another turn 80m further), so the turn was slightly less important, and safer. The course is now unique, interesting, and safe as it could be, and not the same old, same old rectangle.

My only gripe is that the 45's always have to race at 8am at this race, and then it's also a long wait until the 35+123 race. Our little joke is that we spent our racing careers getting faster so we get to race in the afternoon, and now that we're old we go back to being the first race of the day. :-)

It's worth exploring

Warren:

Thanks for the name of the contact person at Sac State. That's very helpful. If we could find someone who we could count on it would be a workable approach. As I said, it has failed in the past (of course, maybe we can afford to sweeten the pot given all the folks who come out to race Zamora! In the past our Sunday race has been a thin draw, making Land Park a make or break event).

We will see what we can do next year. As it was, we had our hands full just pulling off the races this year. Our club size has decreased, though the quality has risen. We were stretched thin just managing the basics.

No, I'm not volunteering, but trying to suggest ways to decrease the burden on a guy who's already doing a lot more than his share. (And Lorri too!) Ask for CeeCee at the CSUS career center about (reliable) student help. She's been good when I've asked. I was also thinking that the student would do the work at the race, not at some other place and time.

Great idea!

Tried the "get a college student to do it" approach 3 or 4 years ago. Finally had to drive by the student's apartment 3 weeks after the race and wait for the guy to come home to get the result sheets back because he "hadn't gotten around to it."

Again, this is a "if you want it done you have to do it yourself" type of project. Unless you are volunteering to copy the results and tabulate and format them...?

$15/hour to a Sac State IT student should cover it. Some dollars from the usually plentiful profit from the weekend instead of you having to do it seems fair to me (and you!). And I have a hunch Lorri is worth more than $15/hour too.

I should also add

We still post results the old fashion way (i.e., we tape a copy of the bib numbers up somewhere) because our race weekend is in mid-March, and sometimes the weather is beautiful and sometimes it is horrible. Two years ago Land Park was run in something approaching a hurricane. I don't want to be worrying about someone's laptop and printer (likely to be mine) in the middle of a storm that is picking up pop-up tents and twisting them like a pretzel. We are a small club that has a long history of putting on a great weekend of racing, and we devote our resources to marshalling our courses and keeping registration running as smoothly as we can. If I had manpower spilling out my ears I'd probably see if we can't generate results on the fly. I think clubs that generate results on the fly are great. I know I appreciate it when I race. But I just don't have the staffing to make that happen.

It's not a matter of it being difficult

I never said it was difficult. It's just time consuming, and I'm only in town for one day out of the seven days following our race weekend. It's one of those "if you want something done you have to do it yourself jobs," and I won't be around to do it. With the large number of preregistrations we have, it will be easier this year, but it still takes time, and doing the manual entry for folks who register day-of takes a lot of time. We have had a lot of years where we had 120 people pre-register for Land Park and then 400 people register the day of. Maybe with the large number of pre-registers it will go twice as fast as in the past, but in the past I've spent about 12 hours on the task.

So again, at the time we had to make the decision, we didn't feel like we had the resources to ensure we would have the results tabulated and in the proper format within 7 days of the race. There is a chance we will actually get the results done in 7 days, but there is no guarantee. And none of us can really afford to miss ANOTHER day of work next week to make sure the results get done by the deadline.

At last year's Masters Track Nat's anyone who wanted complete results could supply their own USB thumb drive and get the results downloaded to it. Of course there were some major errors in the results that were never corrected...

Forgott to say in the last post that at Menlo Park Ryan Fu and I tried to make the promoter's job even easier. The promoter had Ken's Excel spreadsheet program. While I read off the rider numbers from the video Ryan enters the race numbers into a spreadsheet. When we were done we put the results on a thumb drive and gave it to the promoter. Using Ken's program all the promoter had to do was copy the list of race numbers and paste it into Ken's results program and all the rider info would have been automatically filled in. Unfortunately the promoter was having printer problems so the results couldn't be printed up so our efforts to make the promoter's life a little easier on race day were wasted ( except for the practice to make the process even smoother next time).

Promoters can get the USCF rider database Info for the whole country or our region from either USAC or from me. Using this Info a promoter could either put together their own spreadsheet that would look up rider info based in entering the rider's Lic #, or use the Excel program that Ken Hernandez has put together or use the database info to put together a database program based reg/results program. personally I prefer the database program approach since I can type partial first/last name faster than typing in a Lic #. Using either a spreadsheet or a database a promoter should be able to put together rasults on race day that will either meet the NCNCA BAR/BAT requirements in whole or with minimal additional formatting.

I'm trying to figure out why it would be difficult to put race results into a spreadsheet when Sportsbase is used for pre-reg. Since I'll be promoting Masters State Track Championships later in the year and probably using Sportsbase to pre-register everyone...

Doesn't Sportsbase offer the race promoter a spreadsheet file of all the riders who pre-register at Sportsbase? If so, a promoter can later add the other race registrants to this spreadsheet and it would be easy to then generate the rider's race number, and later to organize and format the race results to send off to BAR, USAC, etc.. Am I missing something here?

Does USAC or NCNCA make available a spreadsheet with all relevant info for NCNCA license-holders so a promoter could just enter the riders' license number to bring up all the other relevant info for that rider?

BAR Points Results submittal

I think promoters should submit results for ALL finishers 1-10th place.

Several events only submitted up to 5 or 6 last year (e.g. 2006 Pine Flat RR). Thus, several like me, did not get credit for the balance of BAR/BAT points available.

I ended up shorted 7 BAR/BAT points for the year.

No but the total number of finishers is used to determine ranking points for the USCF ranking system. The more finishers reported the valuable the race is for ranking points. Also if people don't see their results posted to their USAC web page in a timely manner then I get lots of questions and have to explain why their results are missing.

Do places in each race beyond the top 10 score points for the BAR or BAT?

To be in the BAR/BAT series this year promoters have to agree ahead of time to provide NCNCA complete results in a format ( using an Excel spreadsheet) that we can easily import into the BAR/BAT program and easily format for uploading to USAC for their ranking system within 7 days of the race. Basically we need a spread sheet with separate fields for first name. last name, Lic #, place and club or team.

What were the requirements that you were concerned about not meeting?

BAR/BAT

Participation in BAR/BAT this year requires certain things that we felt we could not commit to this year. Therefore, rather than agree to the requirements and then fail to meet them, we decided the responsible thing to do was to not commit to meeting the requirements in the first place.

BAR/BAT ?

How come SGW are not participating in the BAR/BAT points? Is there a reason for not having the Bariani Road Race and Land Park Criterium in the competition. All the other Northern California races are in.

Steve

Trophy?

Sabine:

After some thought, I've deduced that you are referring to the trophy Mr. Vanderhoot won last year. With that understanding, the answer is:

Yes. You get to keep the trophy. Jewel wine is no longer an SGW sponsor, so that particular perpetual trophy appears to reached the end of its run.

We will be bringing about 10 women to your events! Thank you. I had a blast at this event last year. Bring on the wind!

And we'd bring more, but half the team is heading for Visalia.

There is only an ominium for the Women's 4s. In the past, there was also one for Masters 35+ 1/2/3, but the sponsor of that competition has withdrawn.

Combined Results?

Will there be combined results? I see it posted on the flyer, but is it just for the womans? What about Master 35+ 4's?
