Bicyclist killed in crash; rural accident claims life of Davis man, 43

A collision between a bicyclist and a minivan Saturday morning claimed
the life of the bicyclist, identified this morning as a 43-year-old
Davis resident.

Alexander Viktorovich Gaivoronski was biking westbound on County Road 31
near County Road 97, west of Davis, when the accident occurred at about
11:50 a.m., California Highway Patrol Officer Bob Lagomarsino said.

'For undetermined reasons, the bicyclist steered his bike into the
traffic lane,' where a Ford Windstar minivan also was headed westbound,
Lagomarsino said.

The driver, Woodland resident Eduardo Solorzano, 37, attempted to brake
but could not avoid colliding with Gaivoronski, who wore a helmet but
suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene,
Lagomarsino said.

Yolo County Deputy Coroner Laurel Weeks said Gaivoronski had recently
moved to Davis.

Later Saturday, Davis police responded to a single-vehicle crash that
left a 73-year-old Woodland man injured.

Stanley Wilson apparently fell asleep at the wheel while driving his
Ford Aerostar minivan westbound on East Covell Boulevard and struck a
traffic signal pole near J Street, Sgt. Tom Waltz said.

Wilson suffered injuries to his arms and abdomen in the 4:56 p.m. crash
and was taken by ambulance to the UC Davis Medical Center for treatment,
Waltz said.
