Question about preregistering and moving up catagories

I plan to register early for every race I do this year, but I have a question. If I register for a race that is filling up fast as a Cat 4 a few weeks in advance, then in the meantime I earn enough points for an upgrade to Cat 3 is it easy and free to make the change? Is there any way to guarantee that I'll get into the race besides entering in both catagories and paying 2 entry fees, and would I be able to get one of them back?

But you'll have to change your name. Is it WORTH IT?

Thanks.
I think I will just keep an eye on the # entered and if Cat 4 gets close to full before I upgrade I will enter it, and if I happen to upgrade after that I'll try to move to Cat 3.

If the other race is not full, most promoters are willing to change your race for no charge. Extremely few races fill for cat 3's, and if you are over 35, there's another option.

However, expecting to get your money back after paying for two entry fees and only expecting to use one at a popular event is expecting a bit much of most race promoters.

Historically very few races for cat 4's sell out more than two weeks out so even if you qualify for an upgrade earlier than you expect you could legitimately race as a cat 4 for the next two weekends. The upgrade process is pretty quick so you could register for the next races as a cat 3.
