Proposed rule change for Juniors

The proposed rule about restrictions on juniors' equipment failed to pass at the USAC meetings this past weekend. In fact, the response was so overwhelmingly negative that I doubt the idea will be re-visited anytime soon.

This got talked about a good bit at the Local Association conference this past weekend. A lot of people did like the basic concept of avoiding wallet races in juniors but the rule had a lot of issues. One of course being that it wouldn't prevent anyone from spending a huge pile of cash on frame, group, and non-tubie rims/tires.
I was joking with some other LA reps that the proposed rule was secretly sponsored by Zipp, to help reinforce the impression that buying a $2,200 carbon wheelset might actually make a difference. Think of the marketing pitch, "So good it's banned in the juniors!" In reality, this stuff seems more likely to risk a walk back to the finish line if you race on anything but oval concrete (and based on Dunnigan, maybe even then).
