Pre-Registration Ideas

I have been brainstorming on how to encourage pre-registration. Late fees do not seem to be a huge incentive. I asked Dirk of SBO if we (Eye-Q California Classic) could offer race credits for folks who pre-register but cannot make the race. If they cannot make the race after committing, we do not want their money. Dirk has agreed to keep track of any cancellations by Wednesday at 5:00 PM before the event. This means that racers can transfer those reg fees to any other race. Dirk will provide this benefit for any promoter that wishes to use it. I will let you know if this helps with our pre-registration.

The first year Cale Reeder won 45+ BAR, he crashed badly in February and had prepaid a ton of races which he could not enter. Even after he was heathly he was often a DNS. The question often was whether Cale was or was not going to show.
I think offering an entry fee refund if a racer pulls out by the Wednesday before the race would help a lot.
I know a lot of racers who race nearly every weekend & know what races they'll be doing for the next 3 months, but hesitate to enter more than one race in advance at a time in case something comes up (family emergency, crash, injury, broken bike, etc.) that prevents them from racing.

Here's one ... what if we all got jobs that paid well and gave us the weekend off! That might help ;-)
On a serious note, I like Taleo's idea of progresive cost. The number is probably too small to be very effective, but the concept is solid.
