Hi all,

It looks like my travelling mate's category at Mt Hamilton is full. I am looking to coordinate the start/finish line situation with someone. I'll be doing the 45+ 1/2/3. I can leave my car at the finish line.

Just in case, does anyone have directions back to the start that do not include doubling back? Thanks.

This is the route that I am going to ride back. It would be nice to do the Sunol warm up, but usually my mornings before a race are so hectic I won't have time to get out, park and then ride.

After the finish line, I will probably refuel in Livermore and then slow pace it up Calavera.

That's the best route, but the map's a little vague and the Mt. Hamilton Challenege takes you a little out of the way for rest stop #3 in Pleasanton.

Modifying slightly the route sheet I received for the Mt. Hamilton Challenge:

Continue past finish of road race on Mines Road to Del Valle Road stop sign. Continue (right) on Mines Road north towards Livermore:

3.50 L on Telsa Road (later becomes S. Livermore Ave.)

.90 L on Concannon Blvd.

Continue on Cancannon past Wente St., Arroyo Rd. & Holmes St.

3.50 L on Isabel Ave.

.60 R on Vineyard Road (continue on Vineyard to Pleasanton)

3.00 L on Bernal Ave.

(Here you can either make a very quick right off Bernal back on to the continuation of Vineyard into Pleasanton to First St. or Main St. if you want to find a store or cafe or just continue on Bernal...)

L from Bernal on Sunol Blvd (First St. becomes Sunol Blvd. here)

After you cross under 680 make sure you stay on Pleasanton-Sunol Road to parallel 680 S (not Castlewood Dr.).

3.60 L Niles Canyon Road - SR 84

.90 ST on Calevaras Road

13.80 R on Calevaras Rd. at stop sign (rather than Felter Road)

R further down on Piedmont or Old Piedmont Road

Continue on Piedmont a couple of miles to Penitencia Creek Rd.

R on Penitencia Creek Rd (or L if you want to go via Alum Rock Park)

.50 (?) L on N. White Ave.

2.0 L on Alum Rock Ave.

R on Fleming

R on Mahoney Ave. to school race start

Ok. Very cool. Now, can anybody supply me with directions on how I can get from the finish to either the start (w/o doubling back) or to Calavaras rd, in case I do not find a local to ride back with? Looking on the map, it is not obvious to me. Thanks.

I may be in the same situation, and I was thinking of riding to BART in Pleasanton back to SF, then Caltrain to SJ (long day  )

Another possibility is to ride "the loop" back to the start in San Jose. I did this and then some for the Mt. Hamilton Challenge the weekend before last and it's a very pleasant ride. Usually, you can hook up with other racers doing this and get some company as well.

If I do ride back to the start, I plan to bring enough money to have a nice sit down lunch in Livermore first and to buy plenty of cold water as well before I continue back to San Jose.

Another possibility to consider would be to park initially in Sunol (or thereabouts), use the 20 miles (?) mostly on Calaveras Road to Mt. Hamilton as your warm up ride. Then your ride back to the car at the end of the race would only be about 20 miles at most I am guessing.

Thanks for the quick response. I, however, was not too clear. These look like directions for a car. How about if I can't get that car ride back and have to do it by bike?

The directions back to the start would ROUGHLY be:

Continue on Mines rd. toward Livermore then get on Hwy 84 west (I don't know which streets lead to 84, sorry). When Hwy 84 crosses Hwy 680 take 680 south toward San Jose. Exit 680 at Alum Rock rd. and head east.
