Merco RR Results as bad as Snelling?
Wed, 03/05/2008 - 8:08pm
All,
Well, it looks as if the Merco RR results are messed up as well... at least in the 45+ 1/2/3/4 race.
I pretty sure I finished just shy of the top ten... maybe 11th or 12th. Heck, I might have been in the top ten... the results show me as a DNF. Nice job.
My teammate was just a few bikes behind me and he is also recorded as a DNF.
I'm all for finding a better way to get these race results correct.
BTW... my vote on the poll was YES.
Alan

I'm the team mate Alan referred to in his initial post. Frankly, I'm not concerned with my position, as I was somewhere between 12th and 15th. But it's somewhat surprising to see results completely out of whack. I saw a photo of our finish, and riders behind me are listed top ten (they weren't) others beside me listed mid-30s (which would have been about a minute back) and others, like me and Alan DNF. We had probably 25-30 sprinting but it was fairly strung out and I just can't see that accounting for what appears to have been pulling names out of a hat. At least they got the podium right.

Protesting here won't change a result, but it can be a way of sending the message that (maybe) something different/better needs to be done.
We might prefer to call it "constructive feedback".
Did anybody Protest the results at the race site?
If not - it is TOO LATE to protest.
If you really care about your results wait until they are posted and then protest at the race site where the Officials and Video are at. If you leave before they are posted, then you get what is posted. no protesting via email or forum...
Just talked to Sports Base Events they will review the 45+ results on the laptop tomorrow and let me know. I do know that that race split up and the top 30 prox came in then a second bunch came in a few min later. I will keep you updated Thanks
The results in the 35+ 1,2,3 are also incorrect. Same story as the 45+ results. I led my teammate out for the sprint and ended up somewhere around 10th, but I show as DNF. My numbers were on correctly.
In fairness, I knew there were two large rides to my immediate left (between me and the announcers stand) and there was some risk the camera would not see me. I choose not to wait around to check the results because it was not worth the time to me. The $10 or $15 for 10th place is not worth staying for the lengthy process of posting and reviewing the results.
My observation from this thread and the Snelling thread is that the current system is not effective for races that end in mass field sprints. It is frustrating for the riders and, I would suspect, for the officials that have to deal with the problems. Given that we live in one of the most tech savy regions in the world, using technology to solve this problem seems like a good idea. I would gladly pay for a transponder to get prompt and accurate results.
Thanks for the clarification, Casey. Mostly, my dumb sense of humor found the listing amusing. Floyd being a Cat 5 in the Tour made it even funnier. I think it would be safe to say, Chris Horner isn't bothered by being listed as a Cat 1 either. Thanks for the good work, Casey.

Those are issues with the USAC system and not the results produced at the race. It is a function of the USAC results system that adds that type of category information in the results. The problems with adding that category Info in multi category races is that
1) it ignores people who don't have a USAC license
2) if people upgrade then the lower placed people in that category move up in position. In in a 4/5 race if the first placed Cat 5 upgrades then the second placed Cat 5 rider becomes the new 1st placed Cat 5.
3) The USAC database sometimes has issues. I have a screen capture of the USAC database record for Floyd Landis when he was about to win the Tour. The funny thing is that according to the USAC database at the time old Floyd was listed as a Cat 5. Talk about your sandbagging Cat 5 rider :D
