MAZDA RACEWAY MONTHLY TWILIGHT RIDES
Want to Get On Track With Your Bicycle?

MONTEREY, Calif., (March 26, 2009) – To bring more on-track experiences to the fans of Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, the track is opening the circuit for a bicycle ride every month starting on April 8.

Nothing beats the first time a driver goes through the corkscrew and it is an even bigger rush on a bicycle. Everyone is encouraged to come to the track with their bike and helmet to pedal with the staff on the world renowned race track. For those training for the Sea Otter Classic, it’s a great opportunity to preview the course.

The ride will be from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. on April 8 and the cost will be $10 per rider. A portion of the fee will be donated to charity.

Going forward in 2009, the track will hold the monthly Twilight Bike Ride on May 20, June 17, July 22, August 19, September 16 and October 14.

Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca was established in 1957. The world-renowned raceway has been operated since its inception by the Sports Car Racing Association of the Monterey Peninsula (SCRAMP), a not-for-profit 501C(4) corporation. Each race season, SCRAMP donates its net proceeds to the volunteer groups that help put on the races.

Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca’s world-class 2009 racing schedule includes the Festival of Speed featuring Rolex Grand-Am Series May 15-17, Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix featuring MotoGP World Championship July 3-5, the 36th Rolex Monterey Historic Automobile Races August 14-16 and the Monterey Sports Car Championships featuring the American Le Mans Series October 9-11.

MAZDA RACEWAY MONTHLY TWILIGHT
Next Bicycle Ride Hosted by Webcor/Alto Velo

MONTEREY, Calif., (September 23, 2009) – The next Twilight Bicycle Ride at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca will be from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 14. The event will be co-hosted by Webcor/Alto Velo Cycling Club and for the first time at the twilight ride, Light & Motion (cycling lights) will be joining the Twilight Ride to assist the cyclists with demo and rental lights.

The Twilight Ride will be informal and the track will be open to recreational cyclists, including children, throughout the entire time.

The Twilight racing will feature a six lap circuit race with prizes ("primes") awarded to both male and female on designated laps for sprints and king/queen of the mountain.

Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca’s open track twilight cycling program started this past spring and the 2.238 mile circuit is now open monthly to all levels of cyclists who wish to ride and train on the world famous race track. The cost is $10 per rider and a portion of the proceeds is donated to charity.

Since the “Twilights” inception, over 1,000 cyclists have came out to pedal, climb, and descend the same 11 turn layout with a 300 foot elevation change that has played host to so many motor sport events in the past. The very first Twilight this past April featured a practice race using the Sea Otter Classic Criterium course.

Light & Motion has been pioneering state-of-the-art portable lighting systems for 20 years. In 2008, they launched a new line of LED bicycle lights with high-performance optics and cutting edge electronics. These bicycle lights are the lightest, brightest, and most reliable lights available worldwide and are designed and built right here on the Monterey Peninsula.

The twilight cycling series is the brainchild of SCRAMP and the Monterey County Parks Dept., as a program to bring the community together partaking in the fun and healthy recreation sport of cycling.

Laguna Seca Twilight series.

Today at 5:30 p.m. the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca will have an open track twilight cycling program available to the public for the first time in the history of the racing facility that was constructed in 1957. The 2.238 mile circuit will be open to all levels of cyclists who wish to ride and train on the world famous race track. Mazda Raceway has played host to popular motor sports events such as Champ Car/Cart races, the American Le Mans Series, Superbike World Championships, and its biggest event for 2009 the Moto GP Series. The Sea Otter Classic also hosts a National Racing Calendar Road Circuit race next weekend on the track featuring the top U.S.A. domestic Road cyclists.

From a cyclist perspective the smooth pavement and constant elevation changes of the track create a perfect environment to train and race on. There is a demanding climb up the "Rahal Straight" portion of the track which makes the legs burn and tests even the most fit cyclist. The famed "Corkscrew" section of the track is quite a thrill to descend on a bicycle and a must do for anyone who rides a bike and enjoys the sensation of gravity when cycling. My favorite part is "Rainey Curve" named after one of my idols and possibly the best ever Moto racer of all time, county resident Wayne Rainey. This section of the track when taken on a bicycle is tremendously fast and provides the rider with a euphoric feeling of speed and freedom on two wheels.

The twilight cycling series is the brainchild of SCRAMP and the Monterey County Parks Dept., as a program to bring the community together partaking in the fun and healthy recreation sport of cycling. The racetrack will be open once a month through August for cycling with each month having a special program on tap. This first open track session will feature a practice race using the brand new Sea Otter Classic Criterium course. The track will be open for riding at 5: 30 p.m. The practice race which is open to all riders will start at 6:30 p.m. and will use portions of the track including turn 1, turn 11, the finishing straight, and the pit row area. Cost to cycle for the twilight sessions is 10$, with a portion of this fee going to local charities.
