HellyerVelodrome: Friday Races, Monday Beginner Sessions!
Hello all.
If you're interested in checking out the Velodrome ~ there will be a party thinly disguised as a bunch of track races this Friday, May 9th. I've got a little info HERE, so please take a look.
Also, if you check the Hellyer Calendar - you'll see that we've added a few Monday Beginner Sessions to introduce any to the velodrome who normally can't make it on Saturdays. Here's the blurb:
Quote:The Monday night Beginner Sessions are introductory sessions oriented towards introducing you to Hellyer Velodrome rider etiquette, rules of the track, and concepts of track racing. These workouts will be low-intensity, focusing on application of etiquette/rules in a fun, relaxed environment.
Track opens at 5:30pm, Session begins at 6pm, close at sunset. Rental bikes available @ $5, and track use fee of $5.
Any questions, please contact Michael Hernandez:

Hope to see you this Friday, or maybe on one of the Monday's coming up where we'll have Beginner Sessions.
Beginner Sessions dates thru end of June:
May 12, May 26, June 9, June 23.
best,
mhernandez

and we had two awesome junior women out there as well last night giving it a go!
And I hope everyone that attended last night will come back for the next one. We will be making these sessions progressive and building upon whatever we did the session prior. I'm taking my favorite drills from the Richard Brockie/Terry Shaw books of beginner cool and fine tuning them for Monday nights.
Sabine
thanks Velogirl.
And also want to thank all the riders who came out to the Beginner Session last night. Sabine said we had 26 people show up, and i think a few added a couple extra dollars to the NCVA fund because we had $285 in the envelope for deposit in the treasure's envelope. Thanks for that, too.
Big thanks to Joe and Dave for helping with Sabine and me. What a fun time we had. I'll have pictures up of the session at:

And again, next session is a "go" for May 26th. If you're in the neighborhood on Memorial Day. I'm definitely bringing drinks next time, though. And, i think a couple tents are coming out.
thanks again to all and the next 2 Friday Races are 5/23 presented by FresnOakland'ers and 5/30 by VeloGirls.
Each will add their own flare and circumstance to the evening. The first night on the 9th was me and Sabine and our myriad crews (w/ Williamscycling.com wheels free food/drink). The Friday's to come will have their own style and fun. I think we might even see CaseyK on the mic with me.
thanks again all and see you out there,
m
we spectated Friday night and had a blast! great music, exciting races, lots of familiar faces, and good food and beer (thanks to Williams Wheels). of course, the credit goes to Michael for one of the best nights of racing I can remember.
bring on the Friday night fun!!!

What pedals does one recommend?
I have Time on my road bike and have Speedplays on the shelf.

For endurance events you should be fine with either pedal. I use Shimano on both road and track. I used Look when I first started out on the track.
If you take a liking to it, and find you are a sprinter and want to do standing starts you might consider something different. But, either Time or Speedplays will work just fine for getting started

Monday night beginners sessions have finally arrived, and may become as popular as Saturday mornings have. Will the supervisor change from week to week like it does on weekends?
Your usual road setup is a good starting point. You may find you prefer your road pedals, since it's easier to warm up on the road bike in between events.
Ron, i go with my regular road pedals (speedplay).
Pedal clearance and (obviously) weight aren't really an issue at the track, so i'd go with whatever pedal system you're comfortable with.
Again, there are rentals at the track - and some pretty nice ones in there, too. well, certainly decent enough to get the taste of it. And, a nice new complete bike from Montano Velo, Shaw's, etc... can be had for a few bills.
wait a minute, Ron - i'm fine with you not having track leg speed - that could make my life much harder around these parts.
stick to mashing the gears on dirt, dammit.

Chris (and others), there are two listserves that serve the track community, the hellyer and ncva google groups. You can find them from the web, or ridethetrack.com.
If you subscribe, you can usually find carpool partners from the area.
Hope ya'll can make it down.

Ron, I'll join you in the under 145's if I can figure how to get to Hellyer from Caltrain, or hitch a ride from SF.

At the track the main grounds for complaints isn't rider size but lack of fast twitch muscle fibers. :)

And if you're over 180 pounds, no whining about how the little people beat up on you.
