NCNCA Juniors, Families, and Friends:

Juniors...it's time to get turn up the knob on your early season training and get your game face on! The Davis Bike Club and The City of Davis are proud to promote the 'Davis Junior Criterium' on Sunday, 15 February 2009! The Davis Junior Criterium will be held as an ancillary event of the 2009 Amgen Tour of California Start of Stage 1 in Davis, CA.

The event will also be part of the NCNCA Junior Point Series.

The Davis Junior Criterium will be held in Central Park in Downtown Davis immediately after the pro ToC racers depart Davis (approx 12:15 pm). The races will be witnessed by thousands of spectators and you will be racing under the same start truss/props that the pro ToC racers will be using. Podium awards will also be presented on the ToC start stage. Very cool venue!

Three Junior races will be staged on 15 February in Davis, inclusive of a 15-18 FEMALE-ONLY race!:

1) 10-14 year olds (male and female combined); 20 minutes
2) 15-18 year old females; 30 minutes
3) 15-18 year old males; 40 minutes

This is a call out to all you young lady cyclists aged 15-18...this is your chance to race only amongst yourselves...without the boys!! How often does that happen....rally up your friends/teammates/etc....this is gonna be fun!

Males and females will be picked separately in the 10-14 race. 15/16 and 17/18 age groups will be picked separately in the male and female races. Top 6 in each category will be presented with medals, cash (50% minimum), and some VERY cool cycling merchandise. Excellent prime prizes will also be up for grabs!

All racers will receive a custom musette bag full of goodies, as well as a custom T-shirt!

Online Registration for the Davis Junior Criterium will open on 12 January 2009, and will close on 12 February 2009.

Register here: https://www.sportsbaseonline.com/Item.aspx?id=3012

Online registration is ONLY $12. Race day registration will increase to $18.

Davis Juniors Criterium

Jason and the Davis Cycling Club did a fantastic job with the juniors race. The day turned out to be an EPIC type ride for our juniors. Racing on the roads as the pros, standing on the AToC stage for the prizes, and the NASTY weather made the day more than memorable. Congratulations to DBC and all the juniors who raced.

What a great day for the junior riders (and their parents).

The rain didn't show mercy on the pros, but it did on two of the Junior fields. Wow! Over 120 racers in FOUR separate races! First place paid $75 for the older categories, and prizes went six deep in each age group and gender. And the rare opportunity to race the very circuit the Tour riders had ridden the same hour. This was one for the scrapbooks. We must thank Jason for offering this venue for our developing riders. Next year, let's have clear skies and even fuller fields.

Davis Junior Crit Parking

With regard to parking and road closures on 15 February in Davis, please go to this website for maps and info:

http://www.tourofcalifornia-davis.com/

Click on the tab at the top of the page termed 'parking'. Here you will see street closures and times they will be closed.

In the 'parking' section of the this website, you can also view the parking map and google map. There are many options for parking. Most parking around central park and downtown will be closed by 8 AM. On the parking map you will notice points indicated by the letter "P". This indicates parking on UC Davis campus lots ($6). The UC Davis Unitrans will be providing free shuttle service on their busses from remote parking to downtown Davis.

There will also be Bike Valet Parking (free I believe) at 5th and C Streets in Davis..right on the corner 4 of the criterium course.

Please also note that the main Davis entrance from I-80 will be CLOSED for the ToC! You would best be served by entering Davis via UC Davis exit from I-80. Again, please see the maps and related information of the website noted above.

As for a drop off point for 'late' arrivals...it's hard to say...as close as you can get to Central Park...the later in the morning that you arrive, the further away you will be...the best advice I can give is to come early! I'm just trying to be honest about the parking issues...Downtown Davis is gonna be packed with people!

Please don't hesitate to contact me if I can provide any further info.

all the best,

jason

Drop off point?

Jason,

Will there be a drop off point for those "late" arrivals? Then perhaps the parents could ride or walk to the course after they finally find parking.

Parents:

Please carpool to the event!

Riders:

Show your support for junior racing by registering!

Davis Junior Criterium Update

An update from the DBC Junior Criterium headquarters:

1. Updated from the race flyer.... 10-14 Race....Top 6 spots will be awarded for the following categories:

10-12 Female
10-12 Male
13-14 Female
13-14 Male

2. Custom champions jerseys, generously donated by Voler, will be awarded to the winners of each category as noted below...that is eight (8) champs jerseys up for grabs!:

10-12 Female
10-12 Male
13-14 Female
13-14 Male
15-16 Female
15-16 Male
17-18 Female
17-18 Male

3. Davis, CA will be flooded with spectators for the Start of Stage 1 of the Amgen Tour of California! Enough said....please get to Davis early that morning! Don't plan to show up at 10 or 11 and expect parking....you won't find it....I'm trying to work on parking for Juniors racers...I'll let you know if that works out...but, do plan to arrive early that morning....like 7-8 AM....set up camp and take in the festivities. Believe me, you will be glad that you came early!

4. Registration/Waiver Signing/Number pickup will be done in Central Park in Davis that morning, 15 Feb (west side of park on the grass near the rose garden; look for the tents and signs). Reg will open at 9 AM.

5. Junior roll-out will take place at Registration...so come early. If you don't pass the roll out, we will have mechanics available to lock out your gears so that you comply with junior gearing rules. We are doing this because we won't have time at the start line to sort out gearing modifications.

6. Custom bags, water bottles, goodies and T-shirts to all registered Junior racers to be picked up at the registration tent. Some pretty nice swagg!

7. Have fun, come prepared for some exciting racing, and enjoy the races and the Amgen ToC festivities!

All of us in Davis, and with the Davis Bike Club Race Team look forward to greeting you on 15 February!

Contact me if you have any questions.

Just wanted to give a heads up to you all that VeloNews published a press release regarding the Davis Junior Criterium to be held on 15 February 2009 as an ancillary event to the Amgen Tour of California Start of Stage 1 in Davis, CA. The press release can be viewed here:

I'd personally like to extend an invitation to all the female junior cyclists of our district to encourage them to register for this event! One of the races is to be dedicated exclusively to 15-18 year old girls...no boys in the mix!

Davis junior crit

The Early Bird Criterium Training series (Jan 11, 18, 25 and Feb 1 remain) is a great opportunity for juniors to get ready for the season. They can race with their category (3/4 at 8:30am; 1/2/3 at 10:30; W4 @ 1pm; 5's @ 1:45 or with the Jrs at 3:15pm) -and- they can get mentoring at the Advanced clinic (9:30am), at the beginner clinic (noon). If the juniors (and parents) are totally jammed for time they can race at 3:15 and get some post-race advice at 3:45pm

It's going to be a great 2009! Larry Nolan and the Early Bird mentors

I think we should hold off announcing the other venues until they're confirmed. That's the only change in 2009 to February's JPS races.
