Cyclebration Omnium Races 2009
Wed, 09/23/2009 - 10:45pm
I am the director/promoter for Cyclebration - Folsom Lake Bike Festival. 2009 was our second year. We had a huge increase in the number of riders from our innaugural event in 2008 - most notably in road racing. We're happy about that, but still looking to get better in the future. Our goal is to have this event become a NorCal classic one day.
So, lay the good, bad and ugly on me. Constructive criticism is good, but whining and whimpering will be ignored. I'm interested in all aspects you as participants experienced...the courses, your race, the refs, the combination of the three races, the town, the lodging, the other events if you checked them out, etc.
Thanks in advance for the input.[/b]

There were many challenges that were upheld from the Friday TT that were UPHELD. Omnium standings accurately reflect the final times, but not the TT times posted under the event. To verify which lists may be correct, top 3 in the Elite 3 TT should be Volkmann, Grefrath, and Demasi (resp). Thanks for fixing :)
In order to increase the MTB race participants from outside the area, you would need to sanction the races through USA Cycling (NORBA), just as the raod bike races are. Riders need their results at this race count towards their NORBA record and points for upgrades.
Along with no prize money or prizes, no pro's and competitive amateurs outside of the Sacramento valley will attend.
It would be nice to have the best MT Bikers in CA and the US at this event.

Thanks so much for updating the ITT results guys with the names of riders. Next time it would also help if you included team names and/or USAC lic #'s.
It helps clarify some questions I had about BAR/BAT standings for our team.
Cheers and happy, healthy, safe off season.
I concur with most all of what Zebraman had to say. Huge kudos to the promoters and all others involved.
Sunday traffic was really, really bad. And I'd be surprised to hear there was no pushback from locals. The reason I bring this up is I'd be hugely disappointed not to see that most excellent circuit race not continue.
As with all races I go to, I believe the master's 45's and 55's races should be separated (as in the circuit race). I also believe the 45's should be separated into a 4/5's field and 1/2/3's field. There was a bad crash in the crit caused by the disparity of abilities in the Master's 45+/55+ race.
All that being said, you guys are doing a FANTASTIC job. There's only one way to understand how much work goes into putting on a successful bike race, and that's to have tried pulling it off yourself. I know. I have.
One other thing.... the posting of the ITT results by number only doesn't work. I notice the BAR/BAT point standings haven't been updated with them included and I bet this is the reason why.
The crit and circuit results are listed by rider name and team. Wondering why the ITT results haven't been done the same way. Will they be updated with complete info????
Cheers and a very well done to all.
Would like to have been there, but pulled in many different cycling directions in September.
Perhaps earlier in the year? Sounds like a great race.

Also sent via email last week & thanks for a great event. I'm looking forward to it next year and beyond.
Good/Continue
Positive attitude and friendly staff on course and at registration.
Can-do attitude -- for two years in a row now, staff was out manning the TT in the dark, reconciling finish times and final results. THANK YOU for your dedication!
Venues - TT course, crit course, and especially the 2 bridges course are all awesome, well-suited for racing, and fun
Crowd primes and the announcers on Saturday & Sunday were awesome! It helps keep spectators around and those watching excited.
Emailing podium photos -- this is the only race I've been to that emails winners their podium pics -- it's a really great idea
Please Improve
Friday Time Trial --
1. Please announce start fields (Cat 3 men, Cat 4/5 35+, etc) and broadcast/shout missing rider numbers at the start house (preferably with a bull horn).
2. Can you place a large digital timing clock at the start-house? With an official time displayed, riders can better gauge time to start and when they finished.
3. Can you mark (or better mark) the finish on the ground? I had no idea when I finished :(
4. Can someone be available to brief the riders before their race? I was surprised by the cones on course and didn't know if I was to always stay to the right of the cones or if the cones were marking off a hazard . . . also, some may not know that the turnaround is on a hill.
5. Improved coordination between the start house and the "gatekeeper" at the beginning of the course. The "gatekeeper" has an excellent opportunity to make sure that riders start on time. Walkie Talkie? He can announce when fields are supposed to start, if riders are dawdling getting water, etc.
Saturday Criterium --
Was great . . . well organized and seemed to go off without any hitches.
Sunday Circuit --
Please have a course marshall at the first 180 turn. There was a lady with a child in a wagon ON COURSE during the M123 35+ race. This was very dangerous for the racers and for the lady and her child. We were all lucky that the M123 35+ field is a very experienced field and nobody was hurt, racers or spectators.
More primes? -- there were 2 primes for the circuit and 5 for the crit. The crit seemed to be faster and a better race with the primes than the circuit.
Results --
Please include team and rider name with all final results.
Thanks for reading & again, thank you for hosting such a fantastic weekend of racing!
Velo Girls thought the weekend was a smash and we'll definitely be back in 2010. We brought both road racers and mountain bike racers this year. The only nagging question at the end of the weekend was about the disparity of prizes between the road + mountain events. The mountain events (and omnium) received medals. But there was a big cash pay-out for the road omnium. I'm curious about the rationale for this.
Thanks for putting on a great event!

The Circuit Race was fabulous. Love the new course. I don't see much reason for the hairpin at Turn One, unless it's a logistical necessity to get around a barrier, I don't recall. Try bowing the cones at the exit of the turn out a little so people can carry momentum around it.
The Sunday access to downtown was terrible - probably the reason you had so few spectators this year. Better signage on the way into downtown and alternate routes to disperse traffic would help. Gotta believe that the citizenry and tourists who were detoured and delayed will rise as one with tar and feathers if the Sunday routing doesn't change for the better. Not to mention the downtown merchants.
The Crit is always a lovely affair. I know you want to distinguish it from the Sierra Nevada Crit, but that course is far better run clockwise. Nothing is more dangerous than a long arcing run-in for the sprint. It just makes everyone compact into the curb. Although it may seem safe with the relatively small fields you've had, wait until you have 100. The chicane and incline to the finish in the clockwise course are what make this track special.
There is nothing to say about the TT. The course is perfect. The three bumps kill but reassure that the pain is nearly over. Immense thanks for having iced water and sport drinks, and cookies too! Yum.
Although I am quite reasonably discouraged from speaking on behalf of anyone, I feel very comfortable shouting for Team Safeway/Bicycle Plus an immense THANK YOU for putting on such a class, entertaining, well-conceived, well-run, and thoroughly enjoyable omnium on our home turf. Our team will always make this a priority weekend.
