Then try the velodromes in southern California. San Diego offers training races every Tuesday evening, Carson had one this past weekend (4/14) and holds another one on on May 12th, and Encino will hold an omnium for ALL categories on April 28th. Gates open at 1 pm, and racing starts at 2pm for the Women, Juniors and cat 5s. After 3:30 pm the 50+, cat 3/4, and cat 1/2 have their omniums. That's only about 5 hours from Hellyer.

The Encino velodrome is a blast -- short, steep banking. You feel like you're pulling a few g's when you're at speed on the line. Hellyer riders beware: you may want a slightly smaller gear, though.

Won my first track race ever ridden on that 'drome... fun!

Racing for all categories at Encino

The Pointsalapoosa was attended by more than 56 racers, prizes were 6 places deep, and 3 races run for each group--snowball, point a lap, and points race. TWO Junior fields had 6 riders each ( the girls outnumbered the boys), the women's field had 8 riders, the cat 5 field had 15 riders, and there were NO crashes.

Their next Saturday race is May 26th. Go to http://www.encinovelodrome.org for more information.
