When each of you registered to use the forum, you acknowledged and agreed to the following:

Registration Agreement

While the administrators and moderators of this forum will attempt to remove or edit any generally objectionable material as quickly as possible, it is impossible to review every message. Therefore you acknowledge that all posts made to these forums express the views and opinions of the author and not the administrators, moderators or webmaster (except for posts by these people) and hence will not be held liable.

You agree not to post any abusive, obscene, vulgar, slanderous, hateful, threatening, sexually-oriented or any other material that may violate any applicable laws. Doing so may lead to you being immediately and permanently banned (and your service provider being informed). The IP address of all posts is recorded to aid in enforcing these conditions. You agree that the webmaster, administrator and moderators of this forum have the right to remove, edit, move or close any topic at any time should they see fit. As a user you agree to any information you have entered above being stored in a database. While this information will not be disclosed to any third party without your consent the webmaster, administrator and moderators cannot be held responsible for any hacking attempt that may lead to the data being compromised.

This forum system uses cookies to store information on your local computer. These cookies do not contain any of the information you have entered above; they serve only to improve your viewing pleasure. The e-mail address is used only for confirming your registration details and password (and for sending new passwords should you forget your current one).

By clicking Register below you agree to be bound by these conditions.

It has been brought to my attention by several users of this forum that these terms are not adhered to consistently. This is a friendly reminder of the agreement that each of you made when you registered. This agreement will be enforced.

Quiet as a Mouse...

I joined Roaring Mouse two days ago, which included signing on for a number of electronic communications with the Club and racing team.

Each step of the activation process I was required to "Agree" to a single administrator and moderator that could modify, delete, edit and/or otherwise oversee any of my activity on their web locations.

I AGREED to it; it's common practice. Thankful to have an unpaid volunteer do the dirty task of screening for inappropriate content. Don't get me wrong...I love a good rant. But there are limits to my insolence and I trust those folks to maintain those boundaries where I/we have temporarily lost ours.

Besides, I'm more prone to embarrass myself in my rantings than I have the ego strength to admit to myself. Better have my loving friends protect me from things I can't take back...

As far as I know, all of those people are Bill Nicely.

In other words, Bill can single-handedly remove or edit any topic that he chooses from the Forum.

All respect to Bill and the work he's putting in for the NCNCA, but is there anyone else who thinks that such editorial power, as emphasized by his recent reminder to the Forum users, is a bit stifling to the free flow of opinion among the membership?

Has there been a recent surge in discriminatory, obscene or threatening postings of which I was unaware that prompted this sudden concern?

Should the power of editorial control of the association bulletin board be so uniquely vested in any single individual; especially one who was never elected by the members?

I wonder whose will be the first voice stymied ....

Maybe it will be this post. Wouldn't that create a nicelittle paradox?

This has been happening all along. I have only edited one post - to remove a person's full name - in three years, and have continually updated an obscenity filter to keep out spammers and to try to keep the at least the vocabulary civil. I'm reluctant to be more proactive for the reasons you state (also per Casey's early advice) but if Bill wants to spread the responsibility, I welcome the help!

"IMMENSE POWER OF BILL NICELY"

Ditto on Warren's comments. Big thanks for the effort and hard work. Despite how it may seem at times, I know everyone appreciates it!

I've been the un-elected manager of the NCVA googlegroups list for about 3 years. It seems to be going fine.

Alto Velo posts their list rules every month.

I see no reason to feel intimidated by the immense power over this group that Bill Nicely possesses. If one of my posts might be considered libelous or harmful I could be concerned, but as long as there's no censorship for unsuccessful attempts at humor I'll be grateful that someone is willing to volunteer their time to help maintain decorum and spare us from the spammers.

Thank you for your interest in this topic. Your participation is appreciated and noted.

The question I ask myself is "How can I encourage more use of the technologies currently available and what new technologies can be implemented to enhance the user experience for everyone?"

There is more than one way to stifle participation. This should be the place of a free exchange of ideas. These are common topics of concern on bulletin boards and thus the fact that EVERY bulletin board has an acceptable use policy. All members should be served. We should not afraid to address difficult or uncomfortable topics.

In reviewing the need for a policy and considering same I stumbled upon one agreed to by everyone already. So there was nothing new to invent.

Timing. It is best to bring these things up when there is no dust in the air.

So the friendly reminder is to be respectful of the participation of all.

If you would like to participate in managing the forum and related technologies feel free to contact me privately or join the Technology Committee where these things will be discussed.

It is not typically an elected person that volunteers time as an admin or webmaster or moderator, but rather interested parties. If you would like to be a moderator please let me know. I would gladly welcome additional participation.

Repeating my name as an attempt to make this a personal issue is not an argument I will join.

Rules

Many clubs who use Yahoo Groups for club correspondence/discussions routinely post the rules of participation in order to remind/refresh both new and old members of the "rules of engagement."

We're so cynical nowadays.

Odd

This is an odd, out of left field warning that seems to pose more questions than even Zebraman listed.
