2007 Early Bird RR
Sun, 01/21/2007 - 5:48pm
People who are planing on doing the Early Bird RR next Sat should be aware that the race might be cancelled. This weekend the road used for the Early Bird RR was closed due to icy conditions. Hopefully the weather will warm up a bit and the road will be open. IN any Case Velo Promo will have information on Thursday about the race and if it is a go or not. You might want to keep an eye on the Velo Promo web site http://www.velopromo.com/ of the NCNCA.org site http://www.ncnca.org/ or this topic for more information on Thurs and Friday.

Do I remember correctly at the end of the race seeing the flash of someones camera taking pictures, or was it just the the white pain of the first calf cramps of the season flashing before my eyes. If there are posted pictures, does any know where? :P

Also hoping steps will be taken to insure the weather is clear and sunny and cars are kept off the course.
But just in case the promoter cannot manage these details I am bringing the right tools for the job: warm clothes and a rain jacket for the weather, and 24c tires for the pavement. Actually I'll probably use 290gm 27c training sew-ups with tt-weight wheels for the best of both worlds, comfort, traction, and reliability. Don't even try to keep up on the descents...

You got it easy! I can make old man noises by just moving some of my joints...
Yeah, easy for a junior to say.

oh, come on, the Paris-Roubaix style course just makes it more exciting... until your back is out of alignment the next day :)

I am hoping steps will be taken to improve a few of the safety hazards out on the Copperopolis course.
It's one thing that the climb is tore up, we have all come to expect that, but softball and even bowling ball sized chunks of asphalt in the road on the fast flat sections is excessively dangerous.

Maybe, but I've heard that the Copperopolis course is in even worse condition than last year. :D
I really didn't think Copperopolis was that bad last year. (Of course, Dave Levine, who was off the front in our race when he flatted on the last descent would probably disagree with me. ) Leesville Gap seemed worse, but maybe that's because I ran Cosmics for that one.

Even with the small field sizes, this race is an early contender for the "Most flats in a race" category.
What Zvalmart and CPhipps said above is correct.
Casey will say something like "As long as the race meets the minimum distance and field size then it will count toward an upgrade".
Cat 4 to Cat 3 should be no problem, since the fields should easily be over 30, but the field sizes may be to small (and the race length too short ) for Cat 3 to 2 or Cat 2 to Cat 1.

My understanding is that the first four early bird crits are "race simulations" therefore there are no results and no 4 to 3, 3 to 2 or 2 to 1 upgrade points. However, the "race simulations" do count for a mass start race for the 5 to 4 upgrade.
The last early bird crit (Feb. 4) and the early bird road race do count towards upgrades the same as any other race (i.e. if field size is large enough etc.)
I'm sure Casey will post something definitive shortly.

I'm getting conflicting reports--some say that while the EB Crits in Fremont do not count for upgrade or placings--The EB RR in patterson does. I just heard last night from someone that says the EB RR does NOT count for upgrade or placings. Looking at the results from last year, they are posted for the EB RR--which means it counts and the EB Crit results are not posted. Could someone please clarify on this? I am shooting for upgrade points but may feel it is not worth it to drive all the way out to Patterson if upgrade points do not count.
Thanks!
