2007 American Velodrome Challenge Renames Points Race in Memory of John Peckham

San Jose, CA - The Keefe Team Realtors American Velodrome Challenge (AVC) has renamed its points race to the John Peckham Memorial Elite Points Race, in memory of a local cyclist.

John Peckham was a promising rider known to cyclists and fans at Hellyer Velodrome, the venue of the 2007 AVC, a marquee event taking place this July 20-21. On the morning prior to his last training ride, John told his mother he was certain he would soon break into the professional ranks. Later that day he was hit by a driver under the influence of drugs and died.

The Elite Points Race's prize has been increased from $1,000 to $2,000 with a donation from Mary Ann Parker, the mother of John. Said Mary Ann of his son, "He loved racing at the Velodrome, I would just guess that he loved it as much as a road race. That's when he was the happiest. Two wheels, a handlebar, and some pedals. That was Nirvana to him."

"John frequently raced at Hellyer Velodrome and had done very well here," said Robin Horwitz, director of the 2007 AVC. "It feels appropriate for the cycling community to honor his memory by renaming the event."

The AVC is premier track cycling event and this year will be held at the newly renovated Hellyer Park Velodrome on July 20-21, 2007. Several races will be featured over two days, ranging from sprints to endurance rides, and some of the cyclists slated to race in the event include Jennie Reed and Adam Duvendeck, both Americans who recently medaled at the 2007 Pan American Road and Track Championships held in Venezuela; Malaysian star and 2004 Olympian Josiah Ng; 2006 Elite National Kilo champion Stephen Hill; former world master champions Kenny Williams and Larry Nolan; and Bobby Walthour IV, a multiple national champion and a former member of the U.S. National Team.

The AVC will be supported by the Northern California Velodrome Association, ThresholdPower.com, SugarCRM, CyclingPeaks and ClifBar . Registration information and schedule details are available at http://www.sportsbaseonline.com/Item.aspx?item_id=1749.
