Winder and Bassetti Sprint to Wins at 37th Annual Cherry Pie Crit
37th Annual Cherry Pie Criterium
Napa - 5th February 2012
Last Sunday's Cherry Pie Crit saw the races for Women P/1/2/3 and Men P/1/2 come down to field sprints. For the Women, Ruth Winder (Vanderkitten-Focus) made a break mid-way through the race. Winder was caught within three laps but help from team mates saw her into position for the final sprint. Although taking off early for the final uphill straight, Winder managed to hold off Pascale Schnider (Exergy Twenty 12) for the win. Sunshine Townsend (Team TIBCO II) and Liza Rachetto (Primal/MapMyRide) were very close behind for third and fourth, respectively. Anna Barensfeld (Optum Pro Cycling p/b Kelly Benefits Strategies) finished in fifth. For the Men, several break attempts starting early in the race all failed to succeed in sticking; the field kept everything "gruppo compatto". A crash late in the race at the back of the field brought out a neutralized lap and shuffled the order. With two laps remaining, several racers from Team Mike's Bikes took over the lead but Sam Bassetti (California Giant/Specialized) managed to get up into position to contest for and win the sprint. Very little separated Bassetti and Andy Goessling (Team Mike's Bikes) in second. Dana Williams (Team Mike's Bikes) was also close behind in third place. James Laberge (Team Mike's Bikes) made it a good day for the team by finishing fourth. Charles Hutcheson (McGuire Cycling Team) came home in fifth.
