Racers Toil at Berkeley Hills
55th Annual Berkeley Hills Road Race
About half-way into the 143-Km Men Pro-1-2 race, Colin Daw and Keith Hillier (Marc Pro-Strava) got off on a breakaway. "About 40 miles in we got a break. A pretty successful one," said Hillier, "[We] worked together really well." On the final lap, Hillier separated himself from Daw to take the win. Third place went to Torey Philipp (California Giant Berry Farms/Specialized) with team mate Stephen Leece in fourth. Taylor Bertrand-Barrett (Red Peleton) secured fifth place.
In Master Men 35+ 1-2-3, Johnathan Eropkin (SAFEWAY/GA PRC Group/Bicycles Plus) won from his two-racer break partner, Ken Gallardo (IronDataThirstyBearCycling.com). "It was a really strong field out there today," said Eropkin, "Just about every Masters heavy hitter was in there. With two laps to go, I did a stealth attack off the front and Ken Gallardo joined me and we were gone." Gallardo was a close second. Dan Bryant (Folsom Bike/Mercedes Benz) made it up the uphill finish in third followed by Murray Swanson (Peninsula Velo Racing) in fourth and Michael Buckley (Morgan Stanley/Specialized) in fifth.
Gardie Jackson was the winner for Master Men 45+ 1-2-3. Christopher Bowlus (Davis Bike Club Race Team) took second place. Previous 2012 Bikereg.com Premier Series winners in this category, Cale Reeder (Echelon/Charity of Choice) and Kevin Klein (HDR Racing p/b Lombardi Sports), finished respectively in third and fourth place. Fifth place went to Chris Wire (San Jose Bicycle Club).
