video! Master racer Hans Kellner has been wearing a video helmet-cam to races this season, and has posted some truly awesome flicks of the Vineyard CX race (taken in the Senior B event) - check them out here. Thanks Hans!
race report:
After three years at the somewhat inferior venue of a city park in Napa, the Vineyard CX finally lived up to its name with a fine new course at the Domaine Chandon winery vineyards in Yountville. Unlike the rocky hillsides of the World Cup MTB race at the same site, the Chandon CX course toured the late fall splendor of the valley floor. Dodging the soggy weather of the previous weekend (which dropped five inches of rain at the site), the roads and hillsides had dried out (mostly) for a nice balance of dry earth, soft grass, gravel, pavement, and...mud. In homage to last week's Surf City race, we had to throw in at least one mud bog. But just one.The course began at the winery warehouses and sped out into the vineyards for the first runup, a muddy affair leading to a descent between two vine rows. Back on the dirt road for a couple of moderate climbs, a tricky down-up turn, and a slog through soft grass to a gradual run-up. Then a long hammer section around a vineyard block, some more soft earth between vine rows, then through the start-finish for some ups and downs and the mud bog, a long ditch behind the warehouse. "It was a fun and challenging course," one rider commented. "Except that dang pond around the building was only challenging!" Overall, the course was very well received. I think we can say goodbye for a while to the old course at Alston Park.
A few race highlights:
- In the "C" race the hole shot went to Kelly Maher, vineyard manager of Domaine Chandon and our benefactor in providing the venue. (No, giving him a win was not in the contract.) In only his third ever CX race, Kelly shot off to a substantial lead but succumbed to a puncture. It's OK--he figured he probably couldn't have held that pace the whole time anyway.
- The B's were won in a fine ride by Karl Schoknecht, a kid from Germany only 16 years of age. Photographer Andrew Wellman, who brought him to the race, said Karl will be one to watch in the future.
- With Nationals coming up next week, the Masters, Women, and A races all had their share of top riders out to fine-tune their form before leaving for Baltimore. Rich Maile, who leads the district BAR rankings, won handily in the Master race. Rachel Lloyd used the race to practice her bike exchanges--and beat all but three of the master men in the process.
Thanks to all of the riders who came out, to the NVV volunteers and referee Casey Kerrigan, to Larry Brooks of NVV for the worker BBQ, and to our sponsors--Kelly Maher and Domaine Chandon, Mark Grassi of Mark Grassi Construction, and Sheila Moon Designs. See you next year for a bigger and even better event. --Dave Carr
- The A race had perhaps the strongest field of all, if not the largest; six of the top ten riders in Surf City GC came up for the Vineyard CX, with Ben Jacques-Maynes winning handily over teammate Justin Robinson and Ben's brother Andy. Watching Ben, Andy and Justin chasing each other around the course is a familiar sight. After Ben's escape, Andy tested Justin with a few attacks. "Are you gonna let him do that?" I called out to Justin at one point. His reply: "Nope!" Justin Morgan was up there too as he often is this year, but he suffered a jammed derailleur and was forced to withdraw. A worse fate befell Scott Ledterman, whose saddle came apart leaving only the exposed rails. With a spare bike waiting for him, Scott gamely finished out the lap, drawing gasps from the spectators as he attempted a very risky re-mount after the last run-up, fortunately without injury.
