Folsom Park, Folsom CA

Race report from John Elgart:
Sacramento CX A Race & Women, Folsom Park, Oct 31:

I'd call this a dippity-do course. Folsom Park is not a big park, but we
managed to loop the track into a bow-tie shape with a few switch backs,
some sand, several gullies, a number of banked turns, 2 steep run ups, 1
steep run down (sorry about that), a trip through the rodeo, some pavement
and fast dirt. With all this, and 6 dismounts per lap, lap times were still
only three and a half minutes or so. Overall, most people found the course
fun and fast, with a lot of speed changes, and relatively cross bike
friendly.

In the A's, a group of 5 immdiately got off (Brian Rouse, Terry Daley, Dave
Eastwood, Jeff Caton, and Dennis Coyne). I was in the next group back with
Russell "Roadbike" Hamby, Blaise Maher and Mo Robbins.

After a few laps it was Mo and I chasing at about 25 seconds - then it was
Mo chasing with me chasing Mo. Soon Mo was out of sight, and I settled down
to a speed where I could drink my water handups. Soon I was picking off
lapped riders, and with 3 to go I spotted Jeff Caton. With 2 to go I caught
Jeff, then heard the bell ring after I passed the start finish. It was
Brian "Full Suspension" Rouse making his last lap charge. Jeff and I both
went hard to avoid being lapped and held off Brian for the privilege of
doing one more circuit.

On the final lap run-up, I actually RAN and gapped Jeff.  And then just
ahead was Mo, whom I hadn't seen for 30 minutes. I started to close, but Mo
started to speed up - and at the line I was 6th overall, 5 seconds up on
Jeff and 5 seconds down on Mo.

As for the events up front, Dave Eastwood had been in the lead by himself
for the frist half of the race. For many laps Eastwood was chased by Terry
Daley and Brian Rouse - and when he was caught, he was dropped. Then at 3-4
laps to go Rouse attacked Daley to solo in.

The Women's A race was one of the more evenly matched races I've seen. A
group of 4 hung together - Linda Elgart, Caren Spore, Paige Galeoto and
Carolina Wolohan. In the early laps Linda and Paige exchanged the lead
several times, with Caren in tow. Caren is an inexperienced crosser, but a
consumate road racer, experienced mountain biker and runner. So it was not
a surprise that with 3 laps to go Caren's fitness kicked in and she escaped
Linda, eventually to win by a minute. To cap this race off, on the final
lap Linda held off a charging Paige to retain second place by a few
seconds.

Sacramento CX #2
Negro Bar State Rec Area, Folsom
Sunday, 11.14.99
Conditions:
Cool, cloudy, dry

Race report from John Elgart:

Without a doubt this was the best CX race ever in Sacramento.

After two laps in the A's, a group of 3 got off. Dave Carr and Justin
Morgan were on cross bikes. Brian Rouse, the winner of Sacto CX #1, was on
full suspension. It was obvioius that Dave and Justin had the advantage on
the run ups and the flat riding -- while Brian rode most of the single
track that the crosssers were running. After 15 minutes, Dave got a
momentary gap, but he was caught by Justin, and thereafter the group seemed
content to stick together for a while.

With about 20 mintues to go, Brian was dropped by a surge on the flat --
perhaps a victim of too many uphill carries. This left Morgan and Carr to
fight it out, and on the last lap they took turns attacking. On the final
dirt runup, only 300 meters from the line, it looked like Dave had made the
decisive move, but then Justin rallied to catch his wheel and come under in
the final turn 100 meters before the line. It was definitely a criterium
finish.

In the Women A's there was an equally competitive race as Julie Young and
Caren Spore battled neck and neck for 35 minutes. Young, who is a Timex pro
on the road, finally surged away from Caren (who is the NorCal road champ)
in the last few laps. For most of the race mountain biker Paige Galeoto
trailed by only a few seconds. Julie and Caren are two of the more
aerobically gifted cyclists in NorCal, and with some improvement in their
cross technique, they could both be SuperCup contenders.

A note on the course: We designed course at Negro Bar to be cross bike
friendly with a long stretch of pave and dirt road, a fast double dismount,
and 3 hard run ups in succession. There was also a cobbly downhill and
single track preceeded by two forced dismounts. Laps were in the 4-5 minute
range for the A's.

Next Sunday we'll be back at Negro Bar with a slightly different course.

Race report from John Elgart:

Sacramento CX #3: Larsen Laps the Field, Almost

A Race Report: Having Steve Larsen show up for Sacramento is kind of like having Pontoni show up for Supercup. You know he's going to win. The only questions are: By how much? And Would he lap the field?

It turned out that Larsen dispatched the other 16 A-riders with ease to win by 4:14 over 2nd place Justin Morgan, the only rider unlapped. Sporting cool looking LLBean clothing, a Mongoose cross bike and Spox wheels, the pro mountain biker was grace and power, sprinting were most riders were grinding and negotiating the technical sections with nimble feet.

The course this week was our fastest ever - with no single track, no run downs and a minimum of jungle. It did have a long road hill climb, a good run, and 5 dismounts per 5 minute lap (that's means 4:30 for Larsen).

By the half-way point of the race, last week's winner, Justin Morgan, was riding solo two minutes back of Larsen. Justin was being chased at half a minute by a trio of Brian Rouse, Todd Weitzenberg and J VanHeel. Another half minute back were Denis Coyne, Kelly Stephens and your correspondent.

The front trio broke up when VanHeel disappeared. Rouse then gapped Weitzenberg by briefly taking advantage of the draft when Larsen came by.

Behind them, I wound up dueling with Denis and in the end we staged the best finish of the day as we went over the final barrier at 100 meters side by side - and I manged to eek out a 5th place.

Of note, incidentally, was the presence of Matt Anand, Saturn Pro, road hammerhead and cross novice. I wish I had the photo of Linda, arm in an external fixator (left arm), demonstrating proper carrying technique to Matt!
