Sattley Time Trial
10 June 2012 - Final Report

Kris Lunning (Marc Pro-Strava) wins Elite Men at the Sattley Time Trial while Molly Van Houweling (Metromint Cycling) reigns for Elite Women. The day started out cold but temperatures quickly climbed out of the 40s. Beyond the start-finish area, cross-winds were the order of the day for the 40Km out-and-back: "It felt like hard wind on the way out AND on the way back," commented Van Houweling, "It was hard to keep concentrating on cadence, power and position; the wind can be distracting."

Lunning's time of 49'42.4" was 91 seconds ahead of second-place Ariel Herrmann (Metromint Cycling) and a further 9 seconds faster than Joseph Rennie (Red Peloton) in third. Stephen O'Mara (Team Mike's Bikes) took fourth place with Erik Losak (Team Clif Bar) securing the fifth spot. Van Houweling's time was 62 seconds faster than Amy Thornquist (Steven's Bikes p/b Pactimo) with Beth Newell (NOW and Novartis for MS) in third place but over 2 minutes off the winning pace. "I was delighted to win given the caliber of the competition that came out today," said Van Houweling, mentioning both Thornquist and Newell, "I was nervous [but] happy to pull out the win." Team mates from Metromint Cycling, Amanda Seigle and Ellen Sherrill took fourth and fifth, respectively, to give the team a boost in the Premier Series standings; both Van Houweling and the 'Mints take over the lead for Women 1-2-3.

In the Master Men categories, Michael Buckley (Morgan Stanly) was a comfortable winner for the 35-39 age group, 81 seconds the better of Aaron O'Belleiro (Davis Bike Club) while Gregory Gambetta (Folsom Bike/Mercedes) was third, 90 seconds back of first. Chris Phipps (IronDataThirstyBearCycling.com) won the 40-44 age group with a time of 49'36.8". Chris Lyman (Team Specialized Racing Masters) was second only 23 seconds behind Phipps while Jason Walker (Team Specialized Racing Masters) was third; both Phipps and Lyman rode times that were faster than that set by Buckley. For Master Men 40-49, Cale Reeder (Echelon Grand FOndo/Charity of Choice) took just 50'24.5" to complete the 40Km course and take the age-category win. Craig Roemer (Team Specialized Racing Masters) finished 56 seconds slower than Reeder while John Ford (Morgan Stanley/Specialized) was a distant third.
