Steve Dunlap Memorial Time Trial
Davis - 3 June 2012
It is an ominous sight to see Alison Tetrick (Exergy Twenty12) warming up for a time trial...akin to the fictional character Dottie Hinson walking up to the plate in "A League of their Own." On her run, her strength and skill produced deceptive speed as she swept around with a look of determined concentration. And so, after a disappointing Stage 2 Time Trial at the Exergy Tour, Tetrick won the Women Pro/Open category for today's 30Km Dunlap Time Trial, taking a 26-second advantage over second-place Molly Van Houweling (Metromint Cycling). Jane Robertson (Metromint Cycling) secured third place followed by Nine Strika (Los Gatos) in fourth and Emily Foxman (Cycles Fanatic) in fifth.
Elsewhere after the Junior fields, California Giant Specialized took the top three steps of the podium for Pro/Elite Men/Open; Franck Eamon bested his team mate Jesse Moore by 30 seconds whilst Torey Philipp was a further 10 seconds back. Max Jenkins (Competitive Cyclists Racing Team) finished fourth with Jonathan Teeter (Marc Pro-Strava) in fifth.
Chris Phipps (IronDataThirstyBearCycling.com) won the Master 35+ 1-2-3 category, 22 seconds ahead of Michael Buckley (Morgan Stanley/Specialized). Daniel Bryant (Folsom Bike/Mercedes) and Chris Lyman (Team Specialized Racing Masters) were third and fourth, respectively. Fifth place went to Jonathan Eropkin (Safeway/GA PRC Group/Bicycles Plus), a little over 2 minutes off the pace set by Phipps.
Cale Reeder (Echelon/Charity of Choice) won for Master 45+ 1-2-3, 91 seconds ahead of a trio of Team Specialized Racing Masters riders: Craig Roemer in second, Kevin Metcalfe in third, and Larry Nolan in fourth. Fifth place went to Harlan Chapman (Morgan Stanley/Specialized).

For Women's Pro-1-2-3, Amy Thornquist (Steven's Bikes p/b Pactimo) put in an early charge and a solo break for a majority of the race, taking the Queen of the Mountain. A larger chase group behind Thornquist was whittled down to seven as Molly Van Houweling (Metromint Cycling) drove the pace on the downhills. This left Felicia Gomez (Pinnacle Women’s Racing), Brianna Walle (Ironclad Cycling Team), Anna Christiansen (Ironclad Cycling Team), Kristina Seley (Cynergy Cyclery), Nicole Justice (Steven's Bikes p/b Pactimo), Heather Van Sickle (Steven's Bikes p/b Pactimo) and Van Houweling in the chase group; they caught Thornquist with only a few miles to go. A late sprint saw Walle take the win, Justice secure second place and become the 2012 NCNCA Elite Road Race Champion, and Gomez come home in third.
After Jon Hornbeck (Hagers Bermen) took the KOM, in the race for Men Pro-1-2, there was a small group off the front with Shawn Rosenthal (Team Mike's Nikes), Evan Huffman (California Giant/Specialized), James Wingert (Team Mike's Bikes), and John Piasta (Team Mike's Bikes). Rosenthal was off on a solo breakaway for a good stretch but eventually the foursome were caught by a chase group that included Chuck Hutcheson (Marc Pro-Starva), Chris Stastny (California Giant/Specialized), and Tyler Brandt (Team Mike's Bikes). The sprint for the win was an extremely close battle between Stastny and Brandt with Brandt taking the top step and the 2012 NCNCA Elite Road Race Championship. Hutcheson finished a bike's length behind in third.
For Masters 35+ 1-2-3, Chris Phipps (IronDataThirstyBearCycling.com) was KOM and sixth overall. The race win went to Daniel Martin (Safeway/GA PRC Group/Bicycles Plus) as Andres Gil (Michael David Winery) failed to collect any Premier Series points for the first time this season. Cale Reeder (Echelon Gran Fondo/Charity of Choice) took both the KOM and win for Masters 45+ 1-2-3 and also became the first two-time winner for the 2012 NCNCA Premier Series. Kevin Klein (HDR p/b Lombardi Sports), series leader for the 45s, did finish in second place.
